In this, as in the Museum of Modern Art’s Bride and Groom there is vestige of cubist practice in the vertical scar-like marking of the nose and chin. But the simplified oval of the head is nearer to3„4Modigliani’s mature style, just as elaborately compartmented back-ground – particularly elaborate for so small a picture – the stem-like neck and the accent of the locket combine to point the way to his later work.
